Advanced Titration Studies (BiPAP & ASV)

Some patients have sleep apnea that is more complex or difficult to manage with standard CPAP therapy. In these cases, an Advanced Titration Study—using BiPAP, ASV, or other specialized positive airway pressure modes—helps determine the most effective treatment to stabilize breathing and oxygen levels during sleep.

At TriCity Lung & Sleep, advanced titration studies are directed by Dr. Saad S. Ahmad, MD, who is board certified in Sleep Medicine, Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine. This combined expertise allows our team to evaluate complex cases that involve both sleep-related breathing disorders and underlying pulmonary or cardiac disease—including COPD, pulmonary hypertension, or congestive heart failure. Our technologists who perform these advanced titrations are seasoned professionals—typically with over 20 years of experience—and hold multiple advanced credentials such as Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT), Certified in Clinical Sleep Health (CCSH), and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT). Their ongoing training and technical expertise ensure every study is performed safely, accurately, and comfortably..

These studies are typically ordered when patients have central sleep apnea, mixed apnea, or persistent respiratory instability despite CPAP therapy. Each test follows AASM protocols for identifying the ideal mode and pressure settings to support ventilation and oxygen exchange safely—particularly in patients with overlapping respiratory or cardiac conditions.

What to Expect

During an advanced titration study, you’ll spend one night in our accredited sleep center. A registered technologist applies non-invasive sensors and fits you with a specialized mask connected to an adaptive device such as BiPAP or ASV. Throughout the night, pressure settings are adjusted under the direction of our sleep physician to stabilize your breathing pattern, oxygen level, and carbon dioxide exchange. This allows your doctor to determine the most effective therapy plan tailored to your medical condition.

Our Expertise and Commitment

Advanced titration studies require careful coordination between sleep, pulmonary, and cardiac specialties. Under Dr. Ahmad’s supervision, our multidisciplinary approach ensures that every factor—respiratory effort, oxygenation, cardiac rhythm, and treatment tolerance—is considered in real time. Our experienced technologists provide constant observation and adjustment to maintain safety and precision.

  • Evaluation for complex or treatment-resistant sleep apnea
  • Testing with BiPAP, ASV, or other advanced pressure therapies
  • Specialized care for patients with pulmonary or cardiac disease
  • Monitoring by credentialed technologists (RPSGT, CCSH)
  • Interpretation and treatment planning by Dr. Saad S. Ahmad

After your study, results are reviewed by Dr. Ahmad and shared promptly with your referring provider. Based on the findings, your care plan may include long-term PAP therapy, pulmonary management, or further evaluation to ensure optimal outcomes.
