Pulmonary Function Test (PFT)

A Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) is one of the most valuable tools for understanding how well your lungs are working. It measures airflow, lung capacity, and oxygen exchange to help identify or monitor respiratory conditions such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary fibrosis, and other forms of lung disease.

At TriCity Lung & Sleep, we perform all PFTs in our Bay City office using state-of-the-art equipment that meets American Thoracic Society (ATS) standards. Dr. Saad S. Ahmad, MD—board certified in Pulmonary Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Sleep Medicine—personally interprets every study to ensure precise, clinically meaningful results for patients and referring providers.

Fast, In-House Testing

We understand that timely testing is essential to diagnosis and care planning. Pulmonary Function Tests can typically be scheduled quickly—often within a few days after insurance verification or physician order. Because testing is performed on-site, results are processed and sent to the referring provider without delay.

What the Test Measures

PFTs assess multiple aspects of lung performance, including how much air your lungs can hold, how fast you can exhale, and how effectively your lungs move oxygen into your blood. Together, these results provide a detailed picture of your respiratory function and how it changes over time or in response to treatment.

What to Expect During Testing

The test is safe, non-invasive, and generally takes 30–45 minutes. You’ll breathe into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer while following the technologist’s instructions. Some tests may include pre- and post-bronchodilator measurements to assess how your lungs respond to medication. Our technologists are trained to ensure comfort and accuracy throughout the procedure.

Why Pulmonary Function Tests Matter

Pulmonary Function Testing provides critical data for diagnosing, treating, and monitoring lung conditions. For patients with known diseases such as COPD or asthma, it helps determine if current therapies are working effectively. For new patients, it helps confirm or rule out possible causes of shortness of breath, cough, or fatigue.

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) both recommend lung function testing as part of ongoing respiratory health management and prevention of chronic disease progression.

Our Commitment to Accuracy and Access

Every PFT performed at TriCity Lung & Sleep is reviewed for quality and reproducibility according to ATS standards. We verify insurance coverage and handle any required authorizations before scheduling to make the process smooth and efficient for both patients and referring offices. Referring providers trust us for quick turnaround, precise interpretation, and clear reports that support effective treatment planning.

Whether you need testing as part of a new evaluation or ongoing monitoring, our goal is to provide fast, reliable results that help you and your physician make informed decisions about your lung health.
